Byron L. Stewart, 62, of 807 Forest Dr., retired general manager of Guide Lamp Division, who spent his entire career of 38 years with the Anderson Divisions of General Motors, was stricken fatally at 4:45 p.m. Monday at his home. Mr. Stewart joined Delco-Remy Division in 1926 as a student engineer after his graduation from Wabash College. During his 32 years there, he served in a number of production assignments before becoming assistant superintendent of Plant 2. He was later advanced to the position of director of labor relations, and in 1952 was appointed director of personnel. He was a member of the General Motors National Agreement negotiating staff for many years. He served as general manager of Guide Lamp Division from 1958 until April 1, 1965, and under his leadership the Division launched the greatest single expansion program in its history. Mr. Stewart has been a trustee of Wabash College, and of the Presbyterian Church. He serviced as director and first vice president of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, and was presently a life-director; he was vice president and director of the Anderson-Madison County Hospital Development Association, director of the Associated Employers of Indiana, and was the general chairman of the 1960 Madison County United Fund campaign. A director in the Anderson Banking Company, he was active in the Anderson Chamber of Commerce, and served as treasurer of the Indiana Blue Cross. He was also a past president of the Rotary Club. Mr. Stewart was born June 7, 1904, in Darlington, Ind., a son of Walter and Cordelia Stewart. He moved to Anderson when he began his career with Delco-Remy 38 years ago. Survivors are his widow, Geneva L; three daughters, Mrs. Donald Badgley of Muncie, Mrs. Jameson Woollen of Indianapolis and Mrs. William Wilder of Cleveland, Ohio; ten grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Edwin Rowland of Arcadia, Calif.; and Mrs. Chester Holmes of Dayton, Ohio; four brothers, Buren and Sam Stewart of Darlington, Buford Stewart of Eaton, and William Stewart of Lafayette. The body was taken to the Baker Brothers Funeral Home where friends will be received after 4:30 o'clock this afternoon. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the First Presbyterian Church by Dr. George Taggart, pastor. Interment will be in East Maplewood Cemetery. Friends who desire to do so may honor Mr. Stewart with memorial tributes to Wabash College.
